Learned the basics of Computer Science while programming in Java. Then, as our last assignment, built this atrocity of a game: fractally & randomly generated, always solvable game of Light Em All. In this game, the board is generated to allow only 1 valid orientation of all game tiles. The goal is to power all tiles on the board. There is one powerstation and a set power level, dictating how many tiles out it can send power. You can rotate the tiles by clicking, and move the power station to connected tiles with the arrow keys.

Things I learned: Image and JavaWorld libraries. Fractal generation was hard, so making sure all my cases were thoroughly tested and all the recursive “gluing together” of edge and base cases were as robust as could be.

Built minesweeper! You click to reveal non mine tiles, and it will flood fill all adjacent tiles that are not mines. You win the game by revealing all the non-mine tiles. Things I learned: I hate minesweeper. Recursion is actually cool and useful. I hate minesweeper.

Built a game called N-Bullets. You shoot a bullet from the bottom middle of the screen and each “ship“ or circle you hit, the circle splits into increasingly more ships. So, if I hit a level 1 ship, it will explode into 2 level 2 ships. If I hit a level 2 ship, it will explode into 3 level 3 ships. And these ships project outward and hit other ships, causing a chain reaction of beautiful geometric explosions of circles. If you’re really lucky (or in my case, really skilled), you clear the screen of all other ships and win the game!
Things I learned: Proper encapsulation and OOD. The assignment was released in stages, so you really had to design fully modular components to be able to maintain the structure and stability of your code going forward.

I built this for my Object Oriented Design class! It’s a fullly functional spreadsheet program with formulas, dependencies/references, fully segregated MVC pattern, and ~infinite scroll~. It was build with Java and Java’s 🤢Swing🤢 library. Not a fan of java UI!
This project really cemented my design practices for large programs. A large part of the design of this program was focused on making all parts modular, encapsultaed, extensible, and future proof. Each part was designed and implemented with the S.O.L.I.D. principles and various GOF design patterns were employed: Builder, Composition, Visitor, Command, Observor. Each allowed for fully modular functionality while allowing new functionality to easily extend on designed interfaces rather than modifying old code (Open-Closed principle).
Visitors allowed for dynamic polymorphism in how we store, access, and evaluate data types within cells, while allowing for raw data to be stored in a highly native class definition.

Observers allowed for our dependencies and cycle checkers to function efficiently and within reasonable memory + performance constraints while composition allowed us to extend upon and use old functionality without editing or duplication old code. Additionally, we performed code reviews of our classmates, and implemented each others interfaces to get an idea of what design choices bake in (in)flexibility and what can be done going forward to ensure best design. Very extensive unit tests (JUnit4) were a part of every iteration.

Its profound benefit to society lies within the empowerment of each memeber of a society, enabling work on difficult problems, ensuring financial stability and autonomy, and allowing ample thought on individual purpose. This is why the Achievement Gap is the most important problem that we have to solve. After all, what problem can’t we solve with a more democratic, autonomous and educated population?
So I created a free tutoring service (usually cost prohibitive) for students in low-income communities. I called it Reach Out, and I built out a service organization and systemized operations to grow to more than five districts across two states. Twice or more a week, our team of eventually 100+ tutors in Kansas and Nevada tutor over 200+ struggling students in underperforming, underfunded, and low-income schools and communities. All chapters were student-led and founded. Logistics were handled locally by chapter heads and a flat management structure. More info at reachouttutoring.com.

Hip Hop defines us. The culture, mindset, and creative essence of our entire society.

An expository web art installation housed at the old an-vu.com. Rich links to real world coverage of Hip Hop influencing the cultural climate we live in. Emphasized the ongoing, growing effects of the Subculture on youth, art, expression, fashion, identity, activism, society, history, mental health, and popular culture. Arranged in collage, tile format. Mimicking the state of ideas, the flow and fragmentation of a still powerful cultural movement. Mimicking the multifacetedness of such movement formed around a simple medium: music. Hard drive failed after I turned in the project and the header pic of the very first page is the only screenshot I got of the project :(
Here are some of the assets :(
